Five Misunderstandings of Disposable Foam Boxes

August 27, 2022

Disposable foam plastic tableware was lifted from the ban in May this year and regained its legal status. However, doubts surrounding it have not stopped hearing. The National Development and Reform Commission, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the General Administration of Industry and Commerce, the Food and Drug Administration and the China Light Industry Council, the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences Green Packing Professional Committee, the China Packaging Federation Plastic Product Packaging Committee and other five associations Together, they jointly clarified the five major misunderstandings regarding the consumption of disposable foaming lunch boxes as their “respective names”.

Tableware will produce strong carcinogens when heated at 65°C.

Dioxin requires three conditions at the same time: the substance containing benzene rings and chlorine- and bromine-like substances exist at the same time; the temperature is higher than 300 °C to 400 °C; there is a metal catalyst. Disposable plastic foam tableware contains only one condition of benzene ring, so it is impossible to produce dioxins.

When it is hot, it will release dimers, trimers, etc., and produce environmental hormones that are harmful to the human body.

Multinational research institutes have conducted tests on this issue and have clarified that: Disposable foam tableware dimers and trimers do not have the estrogen properties that disrupt human endocrine secretion. Of course, any product should be used correctly. If the foamed tableware is boiled and heated in a microwave, it will certainly be bad. Polystyrene is not resistant to high temperatures and is not suitable for use in microwave ovens. Therefore, as long as the temperature of the packaged food does not exceed 70°C, no harmful substances will be produced under reasonable use.

Tableware contains bisphenol A, can cause reproductive dysfunction?

Bisphenol A is a monomer of polycarbonate, epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester resin. It does not belong to the same category as styrene. Disposable plastic foam tableware does not contain bisphenol A. It is also not likely to be contaminated. Bisphenol A impurities, so the above point of view is entirely nonsense.

The foaming agent used will destroy the atmospheric ozone layer?

Early frothing utensils used freon as a foaming agent, which was harmful to the ozone layer, but China's current freon foaming agent has been replaced by butane and pentane, so it will not cause damage to the atmosphere.

Without a good recycling model, it will bring "white pollution"?

To reduce the "white pollution" caused by disposable foam food containers, recycling is the key. Qian Guijing, deputy chairman of the China Light Industry Council and chairman of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, said that at present, disposable foam plastic tableware can produce a variety of recycled products such as picture frames, photo frames, building insulation materials, and office appliances. Next, China will establish a disposable foam plastic tableware recycling system, strengthen the development and application of recycled products, so that "white pollution" phenomenon no longer appears.
